Simplicity 9140

I haven’t made Simplicity 9140 yet but I’ve had the pattern for a while. The easy to sew dress looks flattering and casual. I love the ease of one-piece dressing and this one has some interesting details.

The soft shoulder and three-quarter sleeves give the dress a casual T-shirt feel. The soft square neckline adds interest and the side pickups on the long version are a nice detail. I love pockets — and this pattern includes side pockets!

I have had the paneled fabric from Elliott Berman Textiles for several years — it is now unavailable. However I like the Art Gallery Fabrics Skopelos Cotton Jersey Stretch Knit Fabric Paparounes Crimson below — it would make up beautifully in this dress.

I will be making a Sew Along for Simplicity 9140 to publish on YouTube. You can subscribe to my channel or newsletter (see below) to get notified when the video is live.

Simplicity 8377

I love Simplicity 8377, it offers lots of great cardigan options. The pattern pieces offer interchangeable lengths, sleeve options, and hem details. Once you fit this easy-to-wear sweater, you can make it up in a flash – over and over again.

The first version I made was the long cardigan with long sleeves out of this yummy purple and black houndstooth check from Minerva. You can read the review on my Minerva Page.

Sewing Makes And Plans Volume 7

The pattern is simple and should be added to your fall sewing plans. It is a good option for someone with beginner sewing skills who can follow a pattern.

My next project for Simplicity 8377 is with this delicious creamy ponte roma from Minerva. It’s perfect for a winter white cardigan. It’s their Ponte Roma Double Stretch Knit Fabric. I can’t wait to cut into this one.

McCall’s 8022

Sewing Makes And Plans Volume 7

This sweatshirt tunic — McCall’s 8022 — is perfect for my personal style. I love casual wear but also want to look current and pulled together — time to ditch the COVID clothes! With the princess seaming and center front pocket (I am crazy for a great pocket) this is just super cute.

The pattern requires a little bit of fitting, and the princess seams help give the sweatshirt shape. I made version A with the collar — no drawstring out of a knit backed fleece I had in my stash. I believe the fabric came from B&J Fabrics in New York City — one of my favorite stores. Substitue Gray fabric for the same cozy sweat shirt look with Minerva’s Plush Cuddle Fleece Fabric.

My next version is going to be out of this Minerva Exclusive Animal Song Sweater Knit Stretch Fabric leopard print sweater knit. It’s not as heavy as the fleece but still cozy and wearable.

Vogue 9253

Sewing Makes And Plans Volume 7

This pattern, Vogue 9253, was everywhere about five years ago. I bought the pattern then, but haven’t sewn it up yet. I am currently on the hunt for a casual but dressy outfit for my daughter’s wedding in December and I thought this might be a good option.

The plunging “V” neckline is too much for me, so I will add a modesty panel. I love the flowy nature of the skirt but I’m not sure about the look of the grown on sleeves. I’m going to make it up in this lovely speckled fabric from Mood and see how it looks.

I like an overall print for this dress since it has simple lines and lots of fabric. This retro Viscose Challis print would make a showstopper dress.

Silhouette 3414

Sewing Makes And Plans Volume 7

I have made these woven yoga pants from Silhouette Patterns over a dozen times. I actually teach an in-person class with this pattern — it is fabulous. You can make these out of everything from flannel for pjs to rayon for something dressy

I’m going to make them out of the Minerva Exclusive Celestial Motion Viscose Challis and widen the leg for a more floaty look. My inspiration was McCall’s 7911 wide leg pant designed by Nicole Miller; gorgeous but too dressy for what I need.

My Favorite Completed Sewing Project List

Vogue 9050

Vogue 9050 Sew Along

This dress needs to be in your wardrobe — it is so versatile. Can I tell you how much I love the way Vogue 9050! It looks great when it’s on. The princess seams are so flattering and the details with the side panel and “V” neckline give the dress a slimming fit. I made the pencil skirt version twice and I love both of them.

Sewing Makes And Plans Volume 7

The linen giraffe print has no stretch and is very bouncy. I made version B, fully lined and fitted, it is gorgeous.

Sewing Makes And Plans Volume 7

I also made a hacked version where the dress is unlined, has a rounded neck, cap sleeves, and no zipper. It sewed up in a snap and looks great.

Silhouette Swing Dress

Sewing Makes And Plans Volume 7

Another one of my tried and true patterns is Silhouette Patterns 4000, the Swing Dress (this pattern has sadly been discontinued). I have made this dress at least a dozen times. I love it with and without sleeves. I’ve made it long, short, and tunic length. The cut is super flattering and since it’s made with a knit, no zipper! You can see how fun it is, in the photo it’s blowing in the wind.

For this version I wanted something a little dressy. I ordered this floral stretch woven from Mood, cut the dress sleeveless and long, then cut out a big chunk in the front for a dramatic high-low. It is fun to wear and just dressy enough to go out, but sweet enough for a garden party.

Lisette Pattern BP277 From Butterick And Wrap Skirt

Sewing Makes And Plans Volume 7

The Top

I have made this pattern (it’s from 2015) several times. The lines on the top are interesting and the crop shape works well with long and short bottoms.

I used a silk fabric from my stash that came from Mood several years ago. It was an impulse purchase when I was in the NYC store — that place is really dangerous for fabric lovers! If you have never been, you might want to add it to your shopping bucket list.

Wrap Skirt Pattern

There is no pattern for this wrap skirt. I just took a length of cloth, wrapped it around my waist, finished the exposed seams (or left them raw on some) and added an elastic.

I used a stretch twill for the camel colored skirt, but any cotton fabric would work. Something cute and playful like this whimsical Printed Polycotton from Minerva would be adorable.
