My Favorite Online Sewing Stores

Shopping online can be fraught with peril – not knowing what you are ordering and if the quality is up to your standards. I’ve put together a list of my favorite online sewing stores.

Best Online Fabric Stores

There are lots of online fabric stores. However, finding one you love to scroll through and keep a running cart full of goodies can be a challenge. Below are some of my favorite fabric stores to visit in person and order online.

Minerva

Minerva is my top favorite online fabric store. They are based in the UK where sewing and crafting is a thriving subculture. I am a Minerva Ambassador because I love their products. You can find good quality inexpensive fabrics and rich high end fabrics — they pretty much have it all.

Minerva also carries patterns, notions, and you can share posts of your favorite makes.

B&J Fabrics

Let me tell you — B&J Fabrics is AMAZING! Located in the Garment District in New York City, they offer the highest of high quality apparel fabric. If you are in NYC, plan an hour or two for simply wandering around. I always leave with at least two full bags of goodies.

Of course, you can order online too.

Elliott Berman Textiles

Elliott Berman Textiles offers a huge selection of fine Italian and French fabrics. They are also located in the NYC Garment District. The 7th floor showroom is piled high with bolt upon bolt of fabric. If you shop in the showroom you will notice there are no prices on any of the bolts. You can ask one of the fabric assistants or simply go for it. At Elliott Berman, you pull down the bolts you want then have one of the assistants follow you around and cut your lengths. No tables here — it’s all measured by arm-length and eye.

Definitely worth a stop on your next NYC visit. The online store is packed with gorgeous fabrics.

Mood Fabrics

I used the stunning black and white Carolina Herrera Italian Black and Silver Floral Burnout Blended Silk Jacquard for my daughters wedding.

Anyone who watches “Project Runway” is familiar with Mood Fabrics. When you visit their NYC showroom, don’t be fooled by the street level Mood Upholstery Fabric Store, the garment fabric store is three floors up. You will find everything you need here. It is the perfect spot for everyday wearable fabric and luxurious special occasion fabric.

When I am shopping in person, I like to shop at Mood first. They require you to leave your bag (in my case a carry on with wheels) at the door. I’m always afraid someone will take my bag and I don’t want it loaded down with my fabric purchases.

Liberty of London

Known for their print fabric, Liberty of London is a department store where the top floor is chock full of gorgeous prints and sewing bobbles. The blouse in the photo is the Dove Blouse pattern crafted with an older Liberty print — this top is so much fun to wear except when I’m cooking — LOL.

Joann

I like shopping at Joann for notions, practice garment fabrics, and costume fabrics. They have great sales and it’s a good place to shop for all your sewing accessories.

I buy ribbons for hair bows on sale at a great price.

M&J Trimming

Trims and notions are an important piece of the sewing puzzle. You will love the selection at M&J Trimming. When there is so much to choose from, it’s easier to shop from your comfy sofa.

Sewing With Sandi

I would be remiss if I didn’t include my own store in this list. Sewing With Sandi is an Etsy shop where I sell patterns, kits, and other sewing projects.

Pattern Review Sites

If you are trying to decide if a pattern works for you or you want to share your make, both of these sites are a great place to start.

Pattern Review

On Pattern Review you can research patterns, post a review, take a class, order Independent artists patterns, or join a contest. It is very inspiring.

The Fold Line

The Fold Line is a UK based fabric shop, blog, vlog, and review outlet. You will discover tons of inspiration when you go poking around their site.

Sewing Machine

Just in case you are in the market for a new sewing machine, check out my favorite beginner/intermediate machine — the Brother CS6000i. It makes amazing buttonholes.

Don’t Be Afraid To Buy Fabric Online

Don’t be afraid to try out new and interesting shops, you might just find your own favorite online sewing stores. When in doubt, order a sample so you can get a hands-on feel before you buy fabric online. Of course, if you are lucky enough to have your own local fabric store, be sure to shop there for some of your sewing project fabric.
