Grainline Studio Yates Coat Pattern Review

Grainline Studio is an independent pattern company based in Chicago. Their pattern drafting and pattern instruction guides are top notch (pun intended). I have made a few of their patterns, the Yates Coat being the most complicated. The instructions are clear. Intermediate sewists will have be able to follow along pretty easily. I hope this Grainline Studio Yates Coat pattern review helps you decide to go ahead and make this lovely coat.

The Pattern

The Yates Coat Pattern is filled with wonderful tailoring details. They include

  • Two piece sleeves
  • Slightly oversized lapel
  • Mid thigh length
  • Full Lining
  • Inseam pockets
  • Well drafted collar

The Fashion Fabric

The fashion fabric I used is a 100% Boiled Wool Coating from Minerva in the gorgeous, saturated wine color. Minerva’s Core Range Heavy 100% Boiled Wool Coating Fabric in wine is the perfect fashion fabric for this coat. The coat would look stunning in any of their shade options.

Mood offers and Alberini Italian Wool Coating in a dozen winter warm colors that would be perfect for this fabulous coat.

Be sure to use heavy weight coating fabrics to create a warm coat with a modern aesthetic.

The Lining Fabric

The fabric requirements for the Yates Coat requires a lining. I used a Jacquard Lining in a deep red for a pop of fancy. Choose a good weight lining fabric to hold up to the heavy coating fabric requirements. Pick a color you like and have fun with it. A fun lining always makes me smile.

A hefty fusible interfacing to give your coat structure and support the weight of the wool.

Other Notions

You will also need heavy duty snaps – no buttons on this one! Choose a coordinating thread to match your fashion fabric for a high-end look.

Muslin For A Cool Weather Outfit

It is imperative to make a practice garment or muslin before you cut into your fashion fabric for something as complicated as a coat. This is the best way to check for fit, plus you get the added benefit of running through the pattern instructions working through any sticky bits.

Use a practice fabric that is inexpensive but close to the weight of your fashion fabric. You should cut and baste the front, back, and sleeves of your muslin to assess the fit. If you want to practice, adding in the collar and any fashion details is a good idea too.
