The Pattern

Simplicity’s Pattern Hack Collection

Design hacking a pattern that you love is a win/win. You only need to fit the garment once, and then you are off and sewing over and over again. Simplicity 8377 will quickly become one of your tried and true knit sweater sewing patterns.

With the multiple pattern pieces, variations include long, mid, or short versions. A straight hem or high low option. Sleeves for the sweater or a sleeveless vest round out the style choices. There are pocket detail options, a front tie, and wrap belt for added personal styling. Why would you ever need another knit sweater pattern? The multiple pieces for design hacking in this Simplicity pattern offer unique ways to style each knit cardigan — giving you creativity and multiple variations to sew and wear.

The Fabric

For my winter white version I used Minerva’s Ponte Roma Double Stretch Knit Fabric in Ivory Cream. Honestly, this is my go to sweater all fall and winter. The color goes with everything, it looks equally great with jeans as well as a cute dress.

It packs great, irons easily, and provides a layer of warmth without being overly bulky and hot.

Sewing Stretch Knit Fabrics

You want your knit cardigan to wear well over time. Stitching a knit with a basic machine stitch isn’t the best option. The stitches can pop over time as the fabric is required to stretch. There are two really good options.

Most newer sewing machines have a stretch stitch, which give your finished knit cardigan the ability to move and stretch with you. If you machine is older, try using a very slight zig zag stitch to give the seams some moveability.

Be sure to use a jersey needle to help sew your stretch knits. Also a twin needle for sewing the hem and topstitching.

I love my serger/overlocker and always serge the inside of my garments. For garments that I may take off and fold over a chair or carry around like jackets and sweaters, I want the inside to look as professional as the outside. Although the edges typically won’t fray with knit fabrics, I like the look of the finished inside seams. A bit over the top? Maybe.

Crushed Velvet Jacket

This is my third Simplicity 8377 make – the cropped length with a pleat in the back. The fabric is Minerva Exclusive Tranquil Moment Crush Velvet Stretch Knit. Gorgeous! I made a matching tank top by hacking McCalls 6559 — you can read my review coming soon!

I can’t decide if I love the shorter or longer version best. This is a great pattern that transcends all seasons.
