The Sew Along

The Pattern
A super simple pattern, New Look 6793 is perfect for a beginner and a breeze to sew up for a more seasoned sewist. The long slip skirt version can be seen in every shop this season in a variety of colors – taupe, burgundy, and leopard print are the most popular options.
I’ve made it in three different fabrics – one woven, two knit. I love them all!
Since this skirt is cut on the bias, if you use a woven, you need to let the cut skirt hang for a solid 24 hours before construction. The bias may grow a bit or a lot depending on the fabric. It is not necessary to let the skirt hang if you make it out of a knit.
The Fabric
For this version I used Minerva Core Range Duchess Satin Fabric Fawn. The color is right on trend and the shiny satin is perfect for a holiday party outfit. I also made the shorter version with the satin to lighten up the skirt. The longer version works well with a lighter weight fabric.
The Duchess Satin is a bit bouncy and slippery, so you need to take a little care when cutting it out. This skirt is cut one piece for the front and one for the back – both on the bias. I cut mine on the floor to make sure the fabric was flat and didn’t pull. You can tape the fabric down to keep it from sliding around when cutting the tissue. I would also recommend using weights instead of pins to hold the tissue down. You can use rulers, cups, your phone – anything heavy works fine.
The Slip Skirts
The satin sews up beautifully. I used a microtex needle to keep the stitches from pulling, inserted an invisible zipper, interfaced the facing, and rolled a baby hem.
For the long tawny colored slip skirt, I used a very stretch knit from Joann and some trim from Mood that was in my stash.
The leopard slip skirt is a slightly stretchy knit, also from Joann Fabrics.
Convert The Pattern To A Knit
I also converted this pattern into a knit with an elastic waist. It is a simple alteration. You might need to size down in the skirt and then just add an elastic waistband. Just make sure you can get the skirt and waistband over your hips.
