Wide Leg Pants Made From A Soft Knit
Simplicity Pattern 9789 offers three make options. For this review I made the knit, wide leg pants – they are like wearing secret pajamas. Floaty and fun, these beauties will take you out to lunch with the girls, into the office, and finish with date night.
In this Sew Along we cover:
- How to keep your pant leg from twisting
- How to sew a waistband and facing with an elastic insert

The Pattern
I love the pants in Simplicity Patterns 9789. They fit great, are easy to wear, and are fashionista ready. I made two pairs of these pants, one with a very stretch visoce from Joann and the other from a not-so stretchy patterned fabric from my stash.
This pattern has three sewing project options: pants, skirt, and ruched top. The ruched top is on my sewing table currently — keep an eye out for that sew along coming up soon.
The pattern comes in two size blocks 4-12 and 12-20. I like that Simplicity patterns have a wide size range for women, I just wish they would all come in one package.
The Fabric
The fabric I used came from my local Joann store. Wandering around the store without a project in mind is a great way to find a good fabric in an of-the-moment color. I do find if I go there for something specific, I almost always come out empty handed.
Fabric Alternatives
Simplicity sewing pattern 9789 calls for a stretch knit. I like this very reasonably priced Minerva Core Range Ritual ITY Silky Stretch Knit Fabric. It comes in a deep Plum and over two dozen other gorgeous colors. The Minerva brand fabrics are an awesome value and they offer a wide selection of colors. I sew with them often.
If I want a specific fabric, I visit one of my Favorite Online Fabric Shops. They offer a wider selection and deliver right to my house – it’s the best! Fabric shops like Mood always have fabrics that are right on trend and also fit my personal style.
The Sew Along
These pants go up super quick. They have an elastic waistband that is not your mom’s elastic waistband – it is smooth and sleek thanks to the stretch fabric. Once you learn to insert an elastic into a waistband before attaching it to your sewing project, you will never go back to threading it with a safety pin — even if the pattern instructions say otherwise.
Styling
I made a coordinating top and jacket from McCall’s Pattern 6559. Having coordinates gives you so many #OOTD options in your fashion collection.
These purple suede shoes are a perfect choice with this outfit. They are from Stitch Fix. If you have ever wanted to give Stitch Fix a try, and I highly suggest you do, go through my link. You will receive $25 off your first order.
