New Spring Simplicity Sewing Pattern Top With Peplum And Shawl Collar
One of Simplicity’s spring sewing patterns that works all year round, Simplicity pattern 9889 princess seam top with a peplum is a cute addition to your closet.
The sewing pattern has no button holes or zips making it a great option for beginner sewists. There are a few sewing pattern instructions I would change — follow my step by step sew along to help you create a perfect top.

The Pattern
Simplicity S9889 is a twist on a classic style with a rounded hem and front button closure. I like the longish short sleeves and princess seam lines. The peplum has a back pleat to add fullness. It is an updated classic pattern and I see it becoming a staple in my tried and true patterns.
Available in sizes 4-12 and 12-20 it will fit a wide range of body shapes. The pattern has several length options and sleeve variations.
Mix and Match Pattern Options
Sleeve Variations
The pattern offers three different sleeve variations. Having various sleeve variations makes the pattern multi seasonal and a good value for Simplicity customers.
Shawl Collar
I love the shawl collar, but the construction could be simpler — see the sew along below for my comments and corrections.
Peplum (Skirt) in two Length options
The longer version is very long, it was almost a dress on me. I do however, like the short length and a length somewhere in between the longer and shorter options. Perhaps, the sewing pattern should have three instead of two length options.
Partial Button Front
No button holes, just button loops. I did find the front gaped a bit, but the top can go on over your head, so I just stitched down the front seam making the buttons a decorative element.
The Fabric
I purchased a white waffle fabric from Misan when I was in London last summer. It was quite the fabric haul and I have waffled (pun intended) on what to do with this gorgeous fabric for a while. The fabric was fairly expensive, but nowhere near the price of the inspiration piece from my Spring Fashion Trends You Can Sew (Or Buy) recommendations.
Minerva Core Range Medium Cotton Waffle Fabric in white is a great substitute for the Misan fabric I used and it is a fraction of the price.
Interfacing
The pattern calls for some interfacing and I added more to the front structure — see sew along below.
I almost exclusively use tricot knit interfacing and you can find it in my Etsy store. It stretches with the fabric as it moves, an important consideration for knit and woven fabrics.
Version A Make
I like the shorter sleeves and peplum for my short stature.
Version B Make
The longer version is super long — way to long for my 5’3″ frame. I took 6 inches off the bottom of Version B for a tunic length and I am happy with the results.
Version C
I like the look of Version Top C, it would make a pretty blouse in a soft, silky fabric.
Sew Along
Follow along with step by step instructions and pattern corrections with my Simplicity sewing pattern 9889 Sew Along. The sew along will make you aware of the pattern pitfalls.
Accessories
Raised waist tops with a wide peplum look best with tapered pants. The shawl collar with partial button front does not lend itself to necklaces, so big fun earrings are the way to go.
The sparkly Kate Lynn “Rise From the Ashes” Phoenix Earrings and the Coiris Statement Chunky Necklace are fun additions to your jewelry collection. They are available on Amazon and won’t break your budget.
The Tribal Fia Pull On Ankle Pants and Michael Kors sandals are from Stitch Fix. Use my link to get $25 off your first order — https://www.stitchfix.com/invite/kykbc9m3hw?utm_campaign=InviteReferral&sod=w&som=c
Simplicity Patterns
Even after a few sewing pattern construction missteps, I like Simplicity pattern 9889. Raised waist tops make your legs look longer. Also, I don’t have any tops with shawl collar details in my current wardrobe making this a nice addition. The pattern offers a variety of length options and sleeve variations giving you lots of slightly different styles to create from one pattern. I love when I can get multiple pieces out of one pattern purchase — since the pattern price can be high when they are not on sale.
Happy Sewing,
Sandi
