Fabric Options

Start with this gorgeous Sherpa shearling like this Shannon Faux Fur Sherpa

Paired with this a faux leather like this Telio Roxanne Faux Leather in Blush

Measuring

Measure the length of the child’s arm – neck to tip of finger (or desired side length).

Next, Measure front/back length from neck at center front to desired center front length – I like this long, it gives more coverage.

Finally Measure around child’s chest and arms (the amount that will wrap around their body) and add 5″

Drafting

Draw pattern on tissue according to these measurements. Use a ruler to connect the dots. I like a French Curve to give a nice line. Cut!

Stitching

I had a faux leather bonded Sherpa in my stash. If you are using two separate pieces, sew them wrong sides together around the edges before beginning construction, making them a one-piece unit.

Stitch along one shoulder edge with wrong sides facing each other for a rustic look. This also lessens the shoulder bulk which could be uncomfortable for a child.

Fold over leading edge 2 inches, up one side, around neck edge and down other side. Stitch down. Securely sew large snaps to leading edge.

  1. I love this – absolutely adorable! I also love that you showed how to make your own pattern. I can’t believe how expensive patterns are these days! As a fellow seamstress, this is something I would definitely attempt – now if I only had a cute grandbaby to make it for.
