1 Structured Jacket

Fitted and structured, jackets are showing off curves with shoulder pads, nipped in waists, and over-the-hips length. Young, hip fashionistas are pairing these “mini-dress” jackets with cute ankle boots for a modern look. More mature fashion mavens are opting for these structured jackets with shorts or long pants. Stepping out in a single head-to-toe color look.

Mood offers a cute pattern, the Ercilla Suit, that takes the structured jacket trend right into your sewing space for free. The pattern is from 2018, but it has all the style details and fit to be on trend again in 2023.

I went for chocolate brown because according to InStyle Magazine, for 2023 chocolate brown, “is not only versatile but can also easily be paired up with a variety of other colors.”

I love a beautiful wool jacket, but for me it’s not practical. My life is full of travel, taking care of my grandchildren, and working nomadically. I need my clothes to pack well and machine washable — I just don’t have time for fussy fabrics. I also like a little stretch in my garments. So I went for this Chocolate Stretch Ponte Knit Chocolate Stretch Ponte Knit from Mood.

I am planning on lining the jacket. I like the look of a lined jacket when you take it off, and there many occasions when you have to remove your jacket. Mood’s Premium Luca Red Polyester Pongee Knit Lining, gives me a bright pop of another trendy 2023 color when I remove the jacket.

My Mood order for the entire suit with a lined jacket was around $120.00.

I saved over $2000.00 on this look — this is why I sew!

2 Plunging Necklines

As a carryover from spring and summer – it is all about the deep “V” neckline. Plunging necklines create a beautiful frame for your face. They don’t have to plunge all the way to your navel, but a serious plunge is super trendy.

Dramatic plunging necklines like this dress from Elie Saab’s Fall Ready To Wear Collection was the inspiration for my plunging neckline fall dress. I didn’t find this particular dress in Saab’s online store, but you can shop similar dresses there that were listed in the $4,000.00 range.

I morphed Simplicity 9702 from a woven to a knit pattern, changing the bodice gathering, and adding a knit sleeve. The results are exactly what I was looking for. I used Minerva Core Range Organic Cotton Jersey Stretch Knit Fabric and my order total was about $40.00. That is a 90 percent savings — not too bad.

3 Classic Buttondown With A Twist

Shirts will always be a staple in everyone’s wardrobe. Part and parcel of the unpretentious normcore trend, shirts and blouses can only vary by degrees. This season, that degree of variation is length. Long and loose shirts to be worn over dresses and pants create a fresh take on the everyday buttondown.

One of my all time favorite designers is Alexander McQueen. The genius that was McQueen remains in his couture designer house which is always on the cutting edge.

This stunning McQueen orchid print silk shirt is listed for $1,390.00. Worth every penny.

London Fabric Haul

I purchased this vibrant royal blue from Misan during my recent London fabric shopping adventure specifically to make a long blouse.

Silhouette Pattern 600, the Classic Blouse is the perfect pattern to lengthen for this look. I plan to take off the collar and just use the collar stand. I will also add tabs to the sleeves for a casual rolled up look.

4 Barely There Garments

Adorable 20 somethings with perfect curves can pull off entire barely there garments covering provocative undies and look fabulous. Many of us, like myself, need to be a little more discrete, but we can still rock the look and stay fairly covered up.

This blouse from Akris shows off this style beautifully with a sheer overblouse and a cami underneath. You see sheers everywhere you shop. Just think about what you can wear them with as an undergarment — something slippery so they will move.

Sew The Fashion Trend

With inspiration from designers like Akris, we can easily sew this trend. Now you do have to sew French seams with most sheers, so that takes some practice. This pretty Dove Blouse pattern from Megan Nielsen is a lovely way to show off the sheer trend and the fun sleeve trend at the same time.

5 Paint The Town Red

Head to toe, red is the color of the season. Vibrant, saturated, and ready to show off, this is a color trend you will see everywhere. If you don’t want to go full-on monochrome outfit in poppy red, then adding a red accent is a perfect nod to the brilliant color trend.

I’m not ready to don a red pantsuit, however, I love a splash of color. This lace vest from Oscar de la Renta is a good compromise (It is shown in navy, but it would be stunning in red at $1,290). I plan to wear this vest over a longish buttondown, jeans, and boots — perfect for apple picking or a harvest fair.

Harpers Bazaar is showcasing red as a hot 2023 style trend. So let’s go paint the town! I opted for a blouse because I would get more wear out of it than a vest. And I love the pop of bright red, a little lace, and it is a stylish piece, perfect for a quick wardrobe update.

  1. I really enjoyed this list of 5 fall fashion trends you can sew or buy! I love a good structured jacket and will be looking to add one to my wardrobe this fall…it’s such a classic piece to have!

  2. I’ve noticed that jackets are really in this fall. Sewing them sounds like a great way to update your wardrobe. I’ve also been seeing the color red everywhere. I love that. It’s nice to have some variation to the traditional fall colors.
