The Video
If you are prefer to watch instead of read — my video review can be found below.
1. Formal Occasion Dress M8446
A Super slinky bias cut dress, McCall’s 8446 by Brandi Joan, may be just what you are craving for that special occasion. The side ruching detail and a thigh high slit will certainly get a girl noticed. There is a back seam with a keyhole opening — no zipper which is smart for this liquid dress.
The McCall’s pattern comes in sizes 4-12 and 14-22.
Fabric
Recommended fabrics include Challis, Charmeuse, Crepe, and stable knits. Although Charmeuse can be a challenge to work with, I love the thought of a bias dress in Mood’s Premium Silk Charmeuse. The rich teal color is stunning for early spring through the end of summer.
Pro Tip: For tips on sewing Charmeuse and other slippery fabrics, visit my How To Sew Slippery Fabrics post and video.
2. Knit Top and Pants M8447
I’m a little baffled by the styling of McCall’s 8447. A cream oversized sweatsuit pattern photographed black pumps and a dressy bag — where is this chick going? The pants have draglines and the top is slouchy — perfect for the couch — I’m confused.
The pull on drawstring pants with side pockets, top stitched faux fly and pintuck detail give the sweatpants a designer look. The cropped top is cute and also has pintuck detailing and a loose collar band.
The McCall’s pattern comes in sizes XS-XL.
Fabric
Stretch Knits like cotton knits, terry knits, ponte knit, and fleece are recommended. Inspired by the all beige outfit Minerva Core Range Light Loop Back French Terry Stretch Knit Fabric in Ivory would be a great choice.
3. Knit Dress M8448
The striped color blocking on McCall’s M8448 is stunning. The diagonal stripes with the asymmetric hemline will be a showstopper on any glamorous occasion.
Sleeve options include a long, slightly belled sleeve or sleeveless making the pattern stretch the seasons.
This McCall’s pattern comes in sizes 8-16 and 18-26.
Fabric
The pattern is sewn with Stretch Knits like Interlock Knits and Jersey. Taking the fabric up a notch, Mood’s Black and White Metallic Speckled Cotton Knit Jersey would elevate this dress from pretty to stunning. Working with stripes is a great way to learn straight line cutting!
4. Dress With Sash Belt M4889
A pull over shirt dress, McCall’s M4889 offers a casual and unconstructed look. The sash helps nip in the flowy housedress feel.
The dress has a front placket, back yoke attached to a gathered back giving the dress its fullness. There are several sleeve variations. We have seen this sewing pattern before, and I’m sure you have one very similar in your pattern stash already.
The McCall’s pattern comes in sizes 8-16 and 18-26.
Fabric
Fabric recommendations are Challis, Linen, Cotton Blends, and Poplin. There are large swaths of fabric allowing this dress to take on a large scale print. Minerva’s Dashwood Studio Gardenia Rayon Challis Fabric is vibrant and fun. If I was going to make this “hang around the house” dress, I would want pretty and bright fabric.
5. Top M8451
This pretty top, McCall’s 8451 is a vest-style blouse. The fitted blouse has long darts from the front and back hemline with an optional tie back.
Sleeves are short or long. The “V” neckline offers a collar variation.
I love the separate pattern pieces for A/B, C, D cup sizes.
The pattern comes in sizes 8-16 and 18-26.
Fabric
Recommended fabrics include: Challis, Cotton Blends, Linen, and Gingham. I love this Mood Exclusive Pink Daisy Dipper Cotton Poplin, it is so delicate. It is slightly sheer and you may want a lining for modesty. What a pretty spring blouse this would make.
This fabric also comes with BCI and OEKO-TEX certifications — pretty and good for the environment.
6. Skirt 8452
Perfect for your favorite teen or tween, McCall’s M8452 is a modern pull on style cargo skirt.
It comes in two lengths and a bubble hem option. Fun pockets and lots of volume make this a chic skirt for the young and young at heart.
The skirt comes in sizes 6-14 and 14-22.
Fabric
Fabric suggestions include Dupioni, Lightweight Nylon, Ripstop, and Taffeta. The Dupioni and Taffeta would make a very regal cargo skirt indeed. A fun play on this modern skirt would be Minerva’s Sevenberry Yarn Dyed Cotton Twill Fabric. I like the idea of mixing a hip sewing pattern with a traditional plaid — sweet and edgy.
7. Romper M8454
McCall’s M8454 is a fitted, front wrap romper that has a flat or pleated front variation. The wrap gives the romper a skort look — skirt in the front and shorts in the back.
There are two sleeve lengths, pocket and collar variations. There is a zipper in the shorts allowing for a close fit.
The McCalls pattern comes in sizes 4-12 and 14-22.
Fabric
Fabric suggestions include Cotton Blends, Poplins, Crepe, and Stretch Wovens. This is a great opportunity to use a stretch woven. You can achieve a snug fit, yet have some movement in the romper. Minerva’s Jardin Woven Stretch Cotton Sateen Fabric in this classic cream and black modern print would be stunning for a late spring or summer outdoor party.
8. Top and Leggings M8455
I like the design style of McCall’s M8455 athletic wear cropped top and leggings — not that I can wear a cropped top, but adding length would be an easy fix.
What I like is the side pockets on the leggings. It is difficult to find leggings with pockets large enough to carry a phone. One view also has a front leg slit design option.
The McCalls pattern comes in sizes XS-XXL.
Fabric
I would recommend quality Athletic Knits for this pattern. You want something that is going to be stable and last, search for a fabric with a great review. Mood offers a wide variety of Athleticwear fabric options with varying weights and lots of fun colors.
9. Knit Top, Shorts and Pants M8456
I purchased McCall’s M8456. I like the wearability of the styles and the pattern offers lots of options.
The top is sleeveless or long sleeve. The pants, culottes, and shorts have a wide waistband and cute seaming details. I’ll pass on the front patch pockets and maybe add side seam pockets for a cleaner look.
Stay tuned for my blog sewing tips on this pattern
This pattern comes in sizes 10-18, 20W-28W, and 30W-38W making it accessible to almost everyone. Bravo McCall’s!
Fabric
Fabric suggestions include Cotton Knit, French Terry, Sweatshirt Fleece. I haven’t decided on a fabric yet, but I love this adorable Cotton Jersey Stretch Knit Fabric with its subtle beachy vibe.
10. Jumpsuit And Sash M8457
I also purchased McCall’s M8457 and it will be featured in my 5 Spring Sewing Trends. I like the loungy easy fit, perfect when it’s time to relax and settle in to read a great book.
The button front jumpsuit has three neckline styles — fit it once and have three different jumpsuit patterns — that is a great value. Of course, side pockets are always a selling point for me. The easy rated pattern comes with a sash pattern also.
Keep an eye out for my McCall’s 8457 sewing tips and review.
The McCall’s pattern comes in sizes S-XXL
Fabric
Recommended fabrics include Cotton Blends, Cotton Lawn, Gauze, and Silkies. As a Minerva Ambassador, I was gifted this stunning Minerva Exclusive Rainbow Harvest Linen Viscose Blend Fabric. I am planning to make version C for summer lounging.
11. Unisex Pull On Shorts and Pants M8458
Pockets, pockets, and more pockets — McCall’s M8458 has all the pockets you want in a pair of cargo pants.
Their pull on version has an elastic and drawstring waist. There is also an elastic cord hem option. Lots and lots of pockets — zipper pockets, bag pockets, and side pockets.
The intermediate sewists pattern comes in sizes XS-XXL
Fabric
Fabric recommendations include Ripstop, Twill, Lightweight Nylon, Chambray, and Cotton Blends.
I like the idea of a pair of Ripstop cargo pants and Mood offers a Balenciaga Italian Safety Yellow Polyester Ripstop that is bright and cheery. With lots of sewing patterns to chose from, this one is a nice change from the standard pant pattern.
12. Blouse, Vest, Skirt and Petticoat by Laura Ashley M8463
Following the success of the Vogue’s Diane von Furstenburg wrap dress pattern release, McCall’s 8463 offers this vintage 1980’s Laura Ashley design. It is a sweet vintage pattern, but I don’t see the same appeal as the iconic wrap dresses.
The pullover blouse has a front button opening, a ruffled Peter Pan collar, ruffled sleeves and a gathered sleeve cap. The unlined vest has classic details. The tiered skirt is somewhat modern reflecting the soft romantic sewing patterns of last summer.
The McCall’s pattern comes in sizes 8-16, not a wide range of sizes. The certainly could have expanded the size options when they re-released this pattern.
Fabric
Fabric suggestions run a range including Broadcloth, Corderoy, Chambray, Cotton, Eyelet, Ticking — pretty much anything woven.
I like this Liberty London Thorpe Tana Cotton Lawn Fabric. It is soft and delicate, the blue imparts a denim feel adding to the retro style.
13. Lined Jacket and Dress by Laura Ashley M8464
Take a trip down memory lane with McCall’s M8464 by Laura Ashley. The 1980’s design would be sweet on someone who likes to dress a little retro. It has a costume feel that takes me back to working in an office when most women could only hope to rise as secretaries or teachers.
The vintage princess seam jacket with gathered sleeve caps and welt pockets would be a challenging make for a beginner sewists. As would the sweetheart neckline dress with side zipper and gathered skirt.
The McCall’s pattern comes in sizes 8-16 and 18-26
Fabric
A wide selection of fabric recommendations include Baby cord, chambray, cotton blends, pique, and more.
There are a lot of pieces to this dress and the skirt is voluminous. Choose a fabric that has a small pattern and is lightweight. I think Mood’s Navy Cotton Pique Shirting with White Polka Dots is a lovely choice. Consider a delicate lining to mitigate some of the fabric sheerness and enhance the skirt drape.
