2024 Fashion Trends You Can Sew (Or Buy)

My 5 Fashion Trends Sewing Plans And Sew Alongs – The Patterns: 1 Vogue, 1 McCall’s, 2 Simplicity, and 1 Itch To Stitch

Everyday wardrobes don’t have to be boring. With a few trendy pieces each new season, you can enhance your capsule wardrobe. I love taking designer pieces and using them to inspire my sewing. Whether you are a fan of Ralph Lauren, Stella McCartney, Victoria Beckham, Christian Siriano (one of my favs), or other famous designers, take inspiration from their creations and breathe some creative fresh air into your current wardrobe. Let’s look at what 2024 fashion trends you can sew that are on spring runways you might want to make.

1. Long, Cozy Sweatshirt In A Soft Shade Trend

The Inspiration

I want a closet full of new sweatshirts in fun colors. My inspiration for this make is this Crop Hoodie Sweatshirt from KHRISJOY. It retails for $950.00 — yikes! That is just a little too much for one item in my budget. Not a problem, I’m going with the pink sweatshirt inspiration in a more relaxed, time-to-binge-watch TV.

The Pattern

Simplicity’s new spring pattern release, S9897, is a Unisex Sweatshirt in Two Lengths By Norris Danta Ford.

The Fabric

As a Minerva Brand Ambassador, I am gifted fabric to make up something fabulous. This month it was Minerva Core Range Super Soft Plush Cuddle Fleece Fabric Light Pink an Minerva Core Range Tubular Ribbing Stretch Knit Fabric Candy Pink. The eye catching color will work in spring, fall, summer, and winter.

All in, the sweatshirt will cost under $50 (buy the pattern on sale) — a significant savings, leaving more money for more pretty things.

The Class

Simplicity 9897 Sweatshirt is the first sew along in my spring series.

2. Jumpsuit Trend

The Inspiration

Jumpsuits and rompers are easy to wear and very trendy. This one from Trina Turk offers shades of vibrant colors perfect for spring and summer outfits. The shop price on this beauty is $298, not too bad, but as sewists we can make it for less. As a happy bonus, we also get a better fit.

The Pattern

McCalls M8457 offers a cute jumpsuit that will work for all those spring parties and summer cookouts. The front button closure makes for easier dressing than a back zipper. It also offers three different sleeve/neckline styles so you can sew this up several times and get a different look each time.

The Fabric

The Minerva Exclusive Rainbow Harvest Linen Viscose Blend Fabric imparts the same feel as the inspiration piece, but at a lower price point. This fabric is also part of the Minerva Brand Ambassador program so you can look for my upcoming review on Minerva.

The Class

I am excited about making this jumpsuit, it will be my first one. You will be able to find my Sew Along on YouTube at Barrett’s Custom Design – Sewing With Sandi once it is complete.

3. Updated Classic White Blouse Trend

The Inspiration

I like to add a new white blouse every spring. It keeps your wardrobe fresh. This stretch cotton version from Veronica Beard is adorable. The cost, however, is not so cute at $328.00.

The Pattern

Simplicity S9889 is a similar style with a rounded hem and front button closure. I like the longish short sleeves and princess seam lines. It is an updated classic pattern and I see it becoming a staple in my tried and true patterns.

The Fabric

I purchased a white waffle fabric from Misan when I was in London last summer. It was quite the fabric haul and I have waffled (pun intended) on what to do with this gorgeous fabric for a while. I think I will use it for this blouse. The fabric was fairly expensive, but nowhere near the price of the inspiration piece.

4. One Button Jacket Trend

Jackets are a staple in my closet. They dress up jeans and a t-shirt, work great with dresses, and are perfect with a pair of slacks. Having seasonal jackets in different weights allows you to dress up your outfit almost year-round.

The Inspiration

I love this bright green Kobi Halperin jacket and priced at $398 it is a great buy. However, when you make a jacket with custom fitting, it hangs so beautifully on your body.

The Pattern

Vogue V2016 offers the same styling detail as the inspiration version. It has welt pockets, one button closure, notched collar, and princess seams. Vogue Patterns does a wonderful job of producing timely pieces that replicate runway fashion trends.

The Fabric

I fell in love with the lime green hue on this Cotton Broadcloth from Minerva. I can just picture this jacket with a white dress for a sunny spring outfit.

The Class

I need to have this jacket made before June; I have a planned event that I want to wear it! You will be able to find my Sew Along on YouTube at Barrett’s Custom Design – Sewing With Sandi once it is complete.

5. Shorts Trend

Shorts and short shorts are taking the runway by storm. For business and play, they are big news and one of the hottest trends for the new season.

The Inspiration

I love these chain print silk shorts from Chloé. I’m not in love with the entire outfit, it looks a little like pajamas to me. But the loose fit and gathered waist appeal to my sense of style. Now the price is a tad high at $1,290.00 — a true budget buster.

The Pattern

The Brampton Shorts from Itch To Stitch replicates everything I love about the inspiration piece. I’ve made these once before and I like the fit. Since I already have the pattern, that is a win.

The Fabric

Minerva Core Range Heavy Triple Crepe Fabric in black will make for a dressy short reminiscent of the inspiration piece. Occasionally you need to forget the color wheel and add some basic solids to round out the trends.

The crepe will dress up the short a bit and add texture for a more interesting make. These will take you from lunch with the girls to date night with your partner.
