Almost every runway designer has at least one shirt or shirt dress in their collection for Spring! They have taken blouses to a new level in design with sleeves, lengths, collars, cuffs, and fabrics. Shirts are everywhere this spring. I’ve chosen two to add to my cutting table inspired by my favorite high end designers!

Rag And Bone
Love this….
Stripes – check, Casual – check, Sleeve Detail – check, Cool Look – check
How chic and cozy is this cool blouse. It is so the Kalle Shirt from Closet Core Patterns, just add sleeves and a modified French Cuff and voila!
How about a cute stripe from Fabric.com. Below are a few options I like.
This Telio Linen Rayon Yarn Dyed Stripe has an easy – breezy summer feel. I just ordered a similar stripe for my next Minerva Makers project.
This Fabric Merchants Hacci Stripe is the one I’m going to make. It’s always hard for me to pass up a vibrant pattern!
Nicole Miller
Miller’s Spring collection is a mix of soft feminine and floating garments paired with structured jackets and army green tops. I love this shirt dress, might need to make it a little longer, but adorable.
This little dress is not in Miller’s shop yet, so we can only guess at the fabric content. What makes it special is the pockets and patchwork. It’s a stand out with the simple hidden placket and sleeveless style.
One options is This Kaffe Fassett Shot Cotton from Fabric.com.
Since I love the patchwork technique, I’m going to go with a layering process using three different fabrics. This one is going to be fun! I’m going to start with the Kaufman Canyon Colored Denim in Avocado as my dress base. Then I’m going to add layers with the Kaufman Warehouse District Essex Texture Moss and a drapery 118″ Sheer Voile Maize. I know, it’s a little unconventional, but the idea is to use the designer look as a jumping off point.
To my surprise, I couldn’t find a coat or cargo pants pattern that had the pocket on the model’s left side. I admit, I gave up after ten minutes. It will be faster to draft one! And I’ll just use the Kalle Shirt from Closet Core Patterns, they have a nice hidden placket.
Conclusion
Looks like I’ll be stitching up a shirt and shirt dress for Spring. Shirts are everywhere this spring and I am happy! Watch for the finished products coming soon!
Happy Sewing,
Sandi
