Butterick 5716 Retro Swing Coat
Some form of retro style has a place in everyone’s wardrobe. It has been said ‘if you wore the style once, you shouldn’t wear it again.’ I agree with the spirit of this saying — I certainly wouldn’t wear my favorite ’70s bell bottoms again — I would look and feel ridiculous. However, a 1953 retro style swing coat would be fun and fashionable. This Butterick Sewing Patterns 5716 is a cute pattern and fun to wear.

The Pattern
The pattern has an exaggerated shawl collar with large patch pockets. It is loose fitting and is fully lined. The cuffed sleeves are longish 3/4 length, but you could add more fabric for a longer look. For this version, I skipped the lining and overlocked all the internal seams. It is a pretty quick sew.
The size range is Xsm, Sml, Med or L, XL, XXL. I made a medium and it is plenty roomy. I find Butterick runs a little large and I didn’t need to add any circumference to this pattern.
Published in 2011, Butterick 5716 is out of print. If you don’t have this one in your stash, you can browse on Etsy and Amazon for a copy.

The Fabric
I used a leopard vinyl fabric from B&J Fabrics, they are one of my most favorite New York fabric shops. I’m like a kid in a candy store when I wander through the isles.

Working with Vinyl
Working with dressmaker vinyl (as opposed to upholstery grade vinyl) is fairly easy. It is a little slippery to cut, but taping the fabric to your cutting surface will keep the slippage in check.
I use a regular stitch and universal needle when sewing vinyl. To keep the water penetration low, you can use a flat felled seam to ensure the rain doesn’t filter through. However, I don’t expect to be wearing this in driving rain, this one is more fashion than function. It is waterproof and perfect for a light shower or low drizzle.

Butterick sewing patterns 5716 is a fun coat to add to your outerwear closet. I have made it several times including a curly red poly just for fun.
