1. Cape By Mimi G Style — Simplicity Pattern 9893
The new Mimi G Style Simplicity Pattern 9893 is a cute cape with fun designer details. The cropped length is on trend and the wrap around “storm flap” is an interesting asymmetrical touch. The pointed collar is a nice tailored detail.
I love the button tabs at the sides. Capes tend to move around and the tabs keep the arm openings more securely in place. The lined cape also has fun cargo pockets with inverted pleats.
The Simplicity pattern comes in sizes XS-XXL.
There is a Mimi G Sew Along to guide you through pattern construction. It is a great way to learn to sew while following along with the designer.
Fabrics
Suggested fashion fabrics include: Broadcloth, cotton blends, denim, lightweight wool, and tweeds. Lining fabric suggestions include: cotton blends and poly blends.
Tweed is so popular this year. This cape would be adorable in this Lady McElroy Wool Tweed Coating. The subtle tweediness of the fabric would read as a solid from afar, but full of interesting texture up close.
2. Color Blocked Dress — Simplicity Patterns 9886 And 9887
This color blocked dress, Simplicity Pattern 9886 and Simplicity Pattern 9887 has interesting design lines. The bodice has princess seams into the armholes and high bust darts. The skirt has two bias cut swoops that go from the front to back. There are pockets in the side seams, which is always a nice detail. As home seamstresses I feel we should put pockets in everything!
The dress pattern has three lengths. It is also patterned for three quarter sleeves or sleeveless. There is an invisible zipper in the center back.
The patterns are offered in sizes 4-12 and 12-20 and 20W-28W and 30W-38W.
Fabrics
Suggested fabrics include: Challis, charmeuse, crepe, rayon, and cotton blends. You definitely want a nice drape on your fabric for the long version.
You can shop for endless color combinations of crepe at Mood. Once you find your favorites, order swatches to narrow down the final color trio idea.
3. One Shoulder Knit Dress — Simplicity Pattern 9885
If you love a one shoulder dress, then Simplicity Pattern 9885 would be an interesting take for you. The nod to Greece with the gathered shoulder adds a touch of grace to the design. The gathered side cut out is not as graceful in my opinion — it appears to create a little chucky opening.
The dress is in two lengths and the shorter version has an asymmetrical hem. Sleeve options include one long sleeve or sleeveless.
The Simplicity pattern comes in sizes 8-16 and 18-26.
Fabrics
Stretch knits are the recommended fabric including bamboo, ITY, ribbed knit, Modal, jersey, and stretch velvet.
I recently used Minerva Exclusive Tranquil Moment Crush Velvet Stretch Knit for a tank and jacket set made with McCall’s 6559 for the tank top and Simplicity 8377 for the jacket. It was a dream to sew and would look lovely made up in this pattern.
4. Cargo Skirt — Simplicity Pattern 9891
The cargo skirt, Simplicity Pattern 9891, has a simple drawstring waistband for a very casual fit. Lot of pockets — side seam pockets with flaps, back patch pockets, and bagged cargo pockets on the sides. The pattern is drafted in three lengths, two with back slits.
The pattern is available in sizes 6-14 and 16-24.
Fabrics
Fabric suggestions include denim, nylon, poplin, rayon, sateen, tencel, and twill. That is an interesting and varied assortment — some light and some not so much.
I like this sweet cherry embroidered denim. The denim is a light to medium weight, a perfect idea for a spring to summer skirt.
5. Blouse — Simplicity Patterns 9889 And 9890
A classic blouse with a twist, Simplicity Pattern 9889 and Simplicity Pattern 9890 will make a cute addition to your spring makes. The shawl collar and princess seams give it a classic style and the raised waist seaming adds a modern design detail.
You will need to sew buttonholes for the partial button up front. The blouse has two length options and short, three quarter and long sleeve options. The long version has a relaxed pleat at the wrist vs a cuff.
The patterns are offered Simplicity Patterns 9899 in two Misses sizes 4-12 and 12-20 and Simplicity Pattern 9890 with two Womens sizes 20W-28W and 30W-38W.
Fabrics
Fabric suggestions include chambray, linen, tencel, rayons, and cottons. All the classic blouse fabrics that create beautiful tops.
Every year I like to add a new white blouse to my personal closet collection. No matter how careful you are, white blouses get tired looking after a season of being a wardrobe workhorse.
You can’t go wrong with a white linen blouse, it is always a good idea. Mood’s Italian White Crisp Linen Woven fits the bill beautifully.
6. Flowy Dress — Simplicity Pattern 9888
A flowy dress, Simplicity Patterns 9888 offers and elastic waist dress with front button placket. It has a classic collar, dropped shoulder and puffy sleeves with elastic closures. There is an optional back waist cut out detail.
The dress pattern has two lengths, and the sleeve options are three quarters or short.
The pattern is offered in sizes 6-14 and 14-22.
Fabrics
Fabric suggestions include gingham, poplin, shirting, linen blends, and cotton blends.
I made several similar dresses last year, in particular, Simplicity 9702. Both my versions were made with a Liberty London cotton lawn. It is a perfect fabric for floaty dresses.
7. Jeans — Simplicity Patterns 9892
A cute, low waisted jean, Simplicity Pattern 9892 offers tons of designer style. Fly front, yoke, and waistband details bring out the classic jean lines, while the flared leg and sweeping center-leg seam lines are young and chic.
This pattern has a sewing rating of average. I am guessing someone just learning to sew may struggle completing the complex lines of this pattern. It may be a learn as you go sew project for a novice sewist.
The Simplicity pattern is printed in sizes 8-16 and 18-26.
Fabrics
Recommended fabric includes chambray, chino, cotton blends, denim, linen blends, poplin, and more.
Art Gallery has this charming cotton denim, the color Canyon Sunset is perfect for spring.
8.Unisex Jacket — Simplicity Patterns 9896
Youthful and loaded with details, Simplicity Patterns 9896 is an interesting unisex jacket. The quilted shoulder detail, color blocking, contrasting trim, and lots of zipper closures are cute design details. I’m sure this jacket will look great on many body types.
Whether you opt for bright color blocking like the jacket shown, or choose something more subtle for your own collection, I think it’s a win.
Again, this pattern is ranked as average difficulty. Unless you have some sewing history with precise binding and zippers, you might want to consider a different pattern.
The pattern is offered in sizes XS-XXL.
Fabrics
The pattern recommends lots of different fabric options including interesting ones like scuba, rip-stop, and micro suede. When combined with traditional options like cotton, demin, and ponte, you can create an interesting and unique jacket.
9. Corset Top And Circle Skirt — Simplicity Patterns 9894
Mimi G’s fitted cropped corset top and circle skirt, Simplicity Pattern 9894, is flirty and feminine. If you love showing off a slice of midriff, this will work for you. The Mimi G brand always offers great design lines, her collections are youthful and fun.
The skirt comes in two lengths and has a size zipper. The corset also has a side zipper. There is also a Mimi G Sew Along where you can learn the steps to sew this pattern.
The pattern comes in sizes 10-18 and 20W-28W, with separate pattern pieces for B, C, and D cup sizes for Miss and C, D, and DD cup sizes for Women.
Fabrics
The fabric suggestions run the gamut, from rayon to denim, brocade to linen. To get a perfect fit, you will need to make a test garment with the same heft as your fashion fabric. You wouldn’t want to put in all that work and then have it go wrong.
How about this Mood Exclusive Summer Nights Rayon Batiste. It has a dreamy vibe that is dressy without being overdone.
10. Unisex Sweatshirt — Simplicity Patterns 9897
Designed by Norris Danta Ford, Simplicity Patterns 9897 is a classic raglan sweatshirt. Comfy and oversized, it is perfect when you want to wear something cozy and comfy.
The super easy sew comes in sizes XS-XXL.

Recommended fabrics are stretch knits like fleece, ponte, and double knits. If you haven’t sewn with these stretch fabrics, it is time to learn to sew with knits. This easy pattern is a good place to join the sew with knits crowd.
