How To Hand Sew
Many of my adult students don’t know how to hand sew, which is a shame because it is a life skill that can help you give longevity to your ready-to-wear garments and home decor. Learning a few basic hand sewing techniques is a fun and easy way to get started sewing.
There are four chapters in the hand sewing section and they subsequently walk you step by step through several beginner sewing project.
Chapter One: Hand Sewing Basics
This chapter is all about supplies you may need to get started hand sewing. It is a basic primer about fabric and tools. It covers how to thread a needle, tying a knot, and a few basic stitches.
Chapter Two: Your First Hand Sewing Project
In chapter two the author takes you through a series of five very easy hand sewing projects. The estimated completion time for each project is under one hour and the instructions are clearly written for beginners. When you want to learn how to sew by hand, this is a great place to start.
Chapter Three: Intermediate Hand Sewing
Chapter three brings five more projects that require a bit more skill now that you are familiar with needle work. These inspired projects take up to an hour and offer beginner sewists great ideas to build your hand sewing prowess.
Chapter Four: Advanced Hand Sewing
You can tackle another five projects in chapter four. These more complicated hand sewing projects allow for creating something more personal. From repairing jeans to working with a zipper, readers will love learning these classic techniques. When you finish this chapter, you will have a better appreciation for hand sewing.
How To Machine Sew
Learning how to use a sewing machine, for a very young child, requires adult supervision. However, for teenage young artists a sewing machine can be a liberating avenue for self expression. For me, sewing after school was a great outlet to express my art and decompress.
My favorite beginner sewing machine is one from the Brother line the new Brother CS7000x (however, the previous version of this machine CS6000i is pictured in the book). You will find a wide selection of inexpensive sewing machines at Joann and Amazon — and, they are available online. You can read about the sewing machines features at Brother CS7000i – my personal experience with this great beginner sewing machine.
Chapter Five: Machine Sewing Basics
Chapter five covers the basics of using a sewing machine; from safety to threading your machine and sewing stitches. When learning how to use a sewing machine, practicing sewing straight lines is key to project success. The colorful pictures in the book cover the machine and sewing techniques admirably cover the expansive topic of machine sewing.
Chapter Six: Your First Sewing Machine Projects
The five projects in this chapter focus on sewing straight lines and creating imaginative projects that would be enjoyable for either a boy or girl.
Chapter Seven: Intermediate Machine Sewing
As you turn the page to chapter seven, you finally come upon projects that require clever sewing and inspired ideas. How many kids imagined they could sew a bean bag chair! It is possible, and with the clearly written instructions and illustrations, older children can tackle this mini sewing course.
Chapter Eight: Advanced Machine Sewing
The final chapter has children working with more patterns and interesting angles. This is where your art can shine. Parents, expect to be amazed at the projects your kids are creating.
