Simplicity Pattern 9789 offers three make options. For this review I made the knit, ruched one-shoulder top. This top is an interesting concept, double fabric layers and a one shoulder detail.
I did, of course, make a few changes to the pattern. In the end the sewing pattern didn’t work for me. However, with a few pattern updates, it would be a cute and wearable top.

The Pattern
The ruched top in Simplicity Patterns 9789 looks adorable. I used a brushed knit from Joann for both the top and lower layer — the construction would have benefitted from a stretch lining layer. It would make the top less dense.

The pattern comes in two size blocks 4-12 and 12-20. I like that Simplicity patterns have a wide size range for women, I just wish they would all come in one package.
The Fabric
The fabric I used came from my local Joann store. Wandering around the store without a project in mind is a great way to find a good fabric in an of-the-moment color. I do find if I go there for something specific, I almost always come out empty handed.
Fabric Alternatives
Simplicity sewing pattern 9789 calls for a stretch knit. I like this very reasonably priced Minerva Core Range Ritual ITY Silky Stretch Knit Fabric. It comes in a deep Plum and over two dozen other gorgeous colors. The Minerva brand fabrics are an awesome value and they offer a wide selection of colors. I sew with them often.
If I want a specific fabric, I visit one of my Favorite Online Fabric Shops. They offer a wider selection and deliver right to my house – it’s the best! Fabric shops like Mood always have fabrics that are right on trend and also fit my personal style.
The Sew Along
This top takes some time to construct. The ruching effect requires gathering the over-layer for the front and back. In the sew along we cover all the techniques you need to complete this top step by step. I also added on a second shoulder for more coverage, a very easy construction addition.
Simplicity Patterns 9789 Issues And Corrections
I had several issues with this pattern although most of them require an easy correction. This top can be a lovely sewing pattern to create fashionable clothing, it just needs a few tweeks.
With two layers of fabric you need a very thin knit. I did use a cotton knit, but the recommended fabrics include stretch velvet!
The second layer or base layer recommendation could be a stretch lining. Its purpose is to hold the base fabric. A thin stretch lining would eliminate some of the bulk from the top.
The pattern calls for a side zipper. I do not understand why you need a side zipper in a knit top, the knit stretches and it isn’t hard to get the top over your head. Never mind it is so much work, the double layers and gathering on the side seam would make installing an invisible zipper very difficult. Certainly not a technique for someone learning to sew.
The pattern also calls for purchased bias tape to finish off the arm holes. If you know me you know I am not a fan of purchased bias tape. I did use my fashion fabric, however there is so much bulk at the arm holes, you really need to leave the tape as a t-shirt style edge. Eventually, I cut off the bias tape and simply turned the edges — which was not a good solution either.
I do like the ruching – I think this will make a wonderful bathing suit top — stay tuned.
